Background

I believe that design is the depiction of the artist’s personal journey and displays the unavoidable coexistence of culture and identity. This collection is a physical representation of my personal journey with self and identity, as I combine my Pakistani culture with my Canadian identity through print, pattern, and silhouette. The title of this collection is "Eik Saath" which is the Urdu word for "Together", as this collection depicts how both cultures merge and coexist with each other in unity.

This collection features brocade fabrics acquired from Pakistan, locally sourced fabrics and trims, hand-painted florals, and digitally printed patterns which are contemporary reflections of their brocade counterpart. The silhouettes all have an asymmetrical aspect to show that although there are two cultures being represented, it does not mean that they are balanced. One does not outweigh the other, however, often one identity leaks through more than the other, despite both of their presence. These silhouettes act as a bridge between the dual cultural personality and show the connection between cultures and multiple identities as they work "Eik Saath."
